The Lithium Resources team is responsible for overseeing our existing resources and discovering new ones to enable Albemarle’s strategy to be a leader from mine to market and ensure a more sustainable future. Members of this teamwork across a variety of geology and engineering functions including exploration, grade control, mine planning, metallurgy/process, environmental/permitting, economics, and community engagement.


We are currently seeking a Principal Geologist – North America to join our Lithium Resources team at the Charlotte Office in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

This is hybrid position will travel (25%) as necessary across North America.

In this role, you will be responsible for developing a roster of exploration targets, including free ground and prospective junior companies; providing quality and timely geological inputs to exploration partnership agreements; and educating the business on internal and external lithium opportunities. Well-suited candidates should be capable of strategic and critical thinking, collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, and be proactive in implementing initiatives relevant to enhancing geology and exploration. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Review internal and external exploration programs for technical rigor, ensuring they meet minimum standards for progression.

  • Technical liaison for meetings and data reviews with exploration partners.

  • Develop the strategic and tactical opportunities for Albemarle’s resource growth in North America.

  • Continuously refine Albemarle’s understanding of lithium pegmatite genesis, including highlighting research opportunities.

  • Review global opportunities on an as-needed basis, collaborating with other technical professionals worldwide.

  • Support technical development of all Albemarle staff members, from junior exploration geologists to top-level presentations.

Essential Functions

  • Travel within North America up to 25% of the year, on an as-needed basis.

  • Curate prospectivity map(s) of North American lithium pegmatite potential, highlighting opportunities for early-stage resource growth.

  • Prepare technical reports on external & internal lithium opportunities.

  • Liaise externally with exploration companies, providing technical review and coordination during partnership discussions.

  • Liaise internally with other stakeholder groups as the subject matter expert on exploration potential in partnership discussions.

  • Review internal and external exploration data for lithium pegmatite potential, highlighting projects to advance or terminate.

  • Review market movement and communicate their potential impact to the lithium resource acquisition landscape.

  • Build exploration capability within the company through collaborative demonstration, including technical reviews, presentations, and workshops.

  • Preparation of material as required for inclusion in company presentations & memorandums.


Requirements:
Education & Experience:

  • At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Geology.

  • Postgraduate degree in Geology viewed strongly.

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in exploration and mining, preferably with direct experience in lithium pegmatites. Experience in greenstone-hosted gold or nickel exploration also viewed positively.

  • Involvement with exploration partnership deals.

  • Commitment to team safety and health in an all aspects of planning and execution.

  • Extensive exploration geology experience with focus on mineral systems thinking, direct detection techniques applicable to lithium pegmatites, and preparing and evaluating exploration program proposals.

  • Experience using Structural Geology and its applications to field mapping and targeting.

  • Experience in evaluating lithium pegmatite prospects considered strongly.

  • Proactive review of external market movements and ability to understand their potential impact on the exploration and resource acquisition landscape.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, especially including collaborative technical communication.

  • A proven problem solver with leadership, mentoring, team building and motivation skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.

  • Proficiency with Maptek Vulcan, Leapfrog Geo, or other modelling software.

  • Participate in annual internal and external budget project reviews.
