Salmag

During the lithium production process in the Atacama salt flat, a series of salts are generated that are by-products and are marketed by Salmag, an Albemarle company, for various uses.

Lithium production begins at the Salar de Atacama Plant.

Salmag offers products aimed at stabilization, dust control and management of unpaved roads; the control of wind erosion in tailings dams; and the control of ice on roads; among other industrial uses such as copper leaching.

Salmag has been a pioneer in Chile in the use of Bischofita, one of the salts that precipitate in the process of concentration of lithium in brine, with more than 20 years of experience that endorse our prestige, security of supply, technology, innovation and product quality.

Our experience and history allow us to be leaders in the use of Bischofita, with an important presence in Chile, with mining and public works being our main customers.

Our work is strongly focused on the permanent development of innovation, with the aim of always finding new and better applications of our products, strengthening our presence in the national and international market on a daily basis, through solid technical support for customers during each stage of their projects, offering products that are also of great importance to face climate change.

Bischophyte “Magnesium Chloride”

Bischophyte is a salt that is obtained from the lithium production process. It is characterized by being deliquescent and hygroscopic (capturing moisture from the environment). When applied on unpaved roads, it captures ambient humidity and keeps the road moist, increasing cohesion between fine particles, preventing the loss of this material and the deterioration of the road, thus reducing the emission of dust. Additionally, it allows significant water savings in dust control versus traditional control methods.

Halite “Sodium Chloride”

Halite (sodium chloride) is a second solution offered by Salmag, derived from lithium production. It is used in copper leaching processes, increasing the efficiency of the ore recovery process.
