Albemarle acquired properties along the periphery of the proposed Kings Mountain Mine to help enable a sufficient visual and noise buffer for the community. This initiative is a key component of Albemarle's plan to responsibly resume mining operations at the site.

There are approximately 65 unoccupied structures that will need to be safely demolished prior to the start of the mine’s construction. Currently, this work is scheduled to begin over the next few months, subject to securing the necessary permits and making the notifications that are required. Structures near Battleground Avenue and Tin Mine Road are expected to be prioritized given more prominent visibility within the community.

For safety and compliance, each property is expected to undergo a thorough inspection by contracted demolition companies to determine the specific requirements for demolition. This includes checking for materials like asbestos, identifying groundwater wells and locating any fuel oil tanks. Based on these assessments, the contractors can apply the necessary practices and equipment to perform the work safely along with securing any additional permits before any demolition begins.

Albemarle is committed to involving the community in this process. We are exploring opportunities to donate select materials from the demolished structures that can be reused. Additionally, we are collaborating with the City of Kings Mountain Fire Department and other community organizations to use some structures for controlled practice burns, ropes training and second-story access training. These activities provide valuable, hands-on skill development and preparedness.

The demolition is expected to require a substantial workforce.

Brayden Beaver, a mechanical project engineer involved in demolition planning said, “Our goal is to use all local contractors. We already have several lined up.”

Throughout the demolition process, the safety and well-being of the community remain a top priority for Albemarle. Community members can keep up to date by visiting the project’s Activities Map posted on the project website. We will continue to engage with local authorities to ensure all activities are conducted responsibly and transparently.
