OUR HISTORY IN CHILE

Producing sustainable lithium for the world from Chile for more than 40 years.

We live in an era of energy transition. Chile, especially the Antofagasta Region, has all the conditions to be a significant contributor to the electrification and digitalization of the world. We are one of the largest lithium producers in the world and have been present in Chile for 41 years together with Corfo.

Timeline for Albemarle's lithium production in Chile.

Our Timeline in Chile

2021:  Albemarle to expand its lithium production capabilities with acquisition of Guaniz Tiantuan New Energy Materials Co. LTD.

2019:

  • Completion of MARBL's Joint Venture (JV) with MRL for the Wodgina2 mine and Kemerton's LiOH conversion plants (50 kT LCE) with access to one of the best grade Li2O1 deposits.
  • The MARBL JV provides ALB with 100% responsibility for the marketing and sale of MRL hydroxide products (60%:40%, ALB:MRL).
  • Kemerton lithium hydroxide is expected to start production (50 MT LCE capacity).

2018:  Expansion of Xinyu II to add 20 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) capacity.

2016:  Acquisition of the Xinyu and Chengdu conversion plant for the production of lithium hydroxide (LiOH).

2015:  Albemarle acquires Rockwood.

2014:

  • Rockwood/Tianqi JV joins Talison Lithium with access to the best ore quality.
  • The rich Greenbushes deposit enables concentrate production with 50% processing at the mine, compared to its counterparts and with a unique carbon footprint advantage, operated by Talison.

2016 Hydrogeological Model

We obtained a new environmental permit after developing a new hydrogeological model of the Salar de Atacama to support the sustainability and balance of the ecosystem.

  • Study conducted over eight years
  • Cost +$20 million dollars (USD)
  • Set the highest standard for sustainable brine extraction in the Salar de Atacama

2016 Historic CPA Agreement

In 2016, the company and the Council of Atacameño Peoples (CPA) signed an unprecedented and historic agreement on "Cooperation, Sustainability and Mutual Benefit", which is in force until today and which marked a new paradigm of understanding between a mining company and an indigenous community.

2021 IRMA Standards

In September 2021, we initiated an independent assessment using the Responsible Mining Assurance Initiative (IRMA) Standard at our Salar de Atacama Plant. RM Certification and Verification Services (ERM CVS) is the IRMA-approved certification body that conducts the audit at Albemarle. We are the first lithium producer to initiate such an evaluation.
