Our Magnolia, Arkansas, Manufacturing Plants

Our Site

We are the largest corporate employer in Columbia County, with more than 650 full-time employees and contractors. The plants – South and West – produce ingredients used in the manufacturing of a wide range of products, including flame retardants, inorganic bromides and products for agricultural use.

The source of our products is the Smackover Formation, a petroleum reservoir and brine-rich mineral resource located about two miles below the surface of Magnolia and the surrounding area.

Using more than 30 operating brine wells, our teams pump brine from the Smackover Formation and process it to extract bromine, an essential element. After processing, the brine is returned to its original formation.

The plants manufacture more than 30 products used in a wide variety of mobility, energy, connectivity and health applications. Our portfolio includes bromine-based fire safety products as well as improved elastomers for fuel-efficient tires; biocides for water treatment and food safety; high-end semiconductors; pharmaceuticals; and drilling and completion fluids for the petroleum industry.

One of Albemarle's two manufacturing plants in Magnolia Arkansas is pictured at dusk, with multiple structures, pipes, and storage tanks illuminated by artificial lights. Steam or smoke rises from various sections, giving a sense of ongoing operations. The sky is deep blue, indicating early evening.

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE)

We also are developing direct lithium technology for testing at the site to take advantage of the lithium found in the same brine for a variety of uses.

OUR HISTORY IN MAGNOLIA

Magnolia's history began in 1853, when the town was founded as an agricultural community focused on cotton.

Our History

Oil was discovered east of Magnolia in 1938, and the Magnolia Oil Field became the largest producing field by volume during the early years of World War II.

Early oil drillers found the brine to be a nuisance, but within a few decades, they realized the brine could, in fact, be much more.

Albemarle’s history took root about that time, with the first bromine operations opening in Magnolia in the late 1960s.

Operations started with a brine field and extraction plant featuring a pair of granite bromine extraction columns, which were state-of-the-art and the only suitable material in use at that time.

Today, those granite columns have given way to more modern materials, and the plant manufactures more than 30 products used in a wide variety of mobility, energy, connectivity and health applications. Some of the granite from those original towers was used to form the foundation for our welcome sign at the plant to remind us of our deep history in Magnolia and the countless innovations that have taken place since our beginning.

CAREERS & WORKFORCE

We recognize the importance of creating and maintaining a long-term pipeline of talent.

We work diligently with the area’s schools to create additional science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational opportunities within their primary education curriculum.
