In the regenerator of the FCCU, the coke formed during the cracking step is burned from the spent catalyst and the catalyst is regenerated for use in the cracking step. The main regeneration reaction products are CO and CO2 in case of partial combustion and CO2 in case of full combustion. The combustion process is controlled by means of a so-called CO combustion promoter. During the combustion process also SOx and NOx are formed in the regenerator as a result of burning the sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the coke.

Albemarle offers its customers the ability to incorporate the CO combustion promotion function either incorporated into the FCC catalyst or as a standalone additive.
